What does the provider need to do to improve?
  • Improve the quality of information that governors receive so that governors are able to hold leaders and managers fully to account for addressing weaknesses in the provision and improving the quality of education further.
  • Improve the recording of actions taken following safeguarding incidents to remove the risk that actions may not be fully implemented. Improve the recording of safeguarding training for staff to avoid the risk that some staff may not receive mandatory training.
  • Ensure that all learners who do not plan to go to university receive advice and guidance about all the opportunities available to them when they leave college.
  • Increase the proportion of learners in business, health and social care, and sport who produce high-quality work at the first attempt.

What does Scarborough Sixth Form College need to do to improve further?
  • Support teachers to improve the quality and consistency of lesson planning so that teaching and learning activities better match the needs and capabilities of all students. Raise expectations for all and provide suitable levels of challenge to the more able students.
  • Introduce a more systematic and robust process for monitoring and evaluating the quality of group tutorials.
  • Strengthen arrangements for target setting and monitoring so that all staff contribute fully to the college’s strategic aim to deliver outstanding educational success.
  • Increase the rigour of arrangements for quality assurance, self-assessment and performance management to drive improvement more rapidly in the minority of areas where progress in improving students’ outcomes has been slow.

Areas for improvement The college should address:
  • Low value added and low pass rates in a minority of GCE AS and A-level subjects
  • Lack of rigour in the arrangements to identify additional learning needs
  • Insufficiently detailed learning plans to enable pastoral tutors to monitor individual progress
  • Too much variation in the quality of students’ tutorial experience
  • Insufficient monitoring of some areas of the college’s work
