What does the provider need to do to improve further?
  • Ensure that all teachers carefully plan lessons that:
    • take into account the needs and abilities of all learners within each class
    • have a pace of learning which is appropriate for all learners to make progress
    • challenge the most able learners to achieve their full potential.
  • Increase the proportion of study programme learners that achieve their English and mathematics qualifications, by:
    • improving the rate of attendance at these subjects
    • better identifying the topics that learners are not yet confident with and developing strategies to enable teachers to address them.
  • Leaders and managers must ensure that all adult learners have a good understanding of how to keep themselves safe from the risks posed by radicalisation and extremism.

  • Ensure that the internal evaluation of teaching, learning and assessment focuses more consistently on students’ learning and helps to accelerate the progress from good to outstanding teaching and learning.
  • Implement the well-considered college strategies to ensure that all students fully develop their English and mathematics skills and gain their GCSE qualifications in these subjects.
  • Through a programme of staff development, ensure that teachers know how to plan and teach lessons that consistently enable their more capable students to develop higher level skills and gain their highest grades.

  • Improve the effectiveness of individual learning and assessment plans by giving greater consideration to learners’ skills, knowledge and ability as well as the workplace opportunities available.
  • Promote equality and diversity throughout the programme by using structured and effective discussion during the review process, and by including specific topics in schemes of work.
  • Ensure that staff use the self-assessment processes to evaluate the quality of provision accurately by using robust evidence from a range of sources, including the workplace.

  • Improve students’ success rates in lower-performing courses, and for male students, through consistently good teaching and learning. Monitor closely the progress made by work-based learners.
  • Improve teaching and learning by ensuring that all teachers use appropriate questioning techniques to check students’ understanding, and that lessons meet the individual learning needs of students. Ensure that students attend punctually to avoid disrupting lessons.
