We discussed with staff and the Education Department how they might continue to improve the college. This is what we agreed with them.
  • Continue to improve retention and achievement rates, particularly in those programme areas where they are low.
  • Provide staff with the necessary CPD to enable them to engage more fully in self-evaluation activities to support improvement.
  • The college and Education Department need to work together more effectively to find workable solutions to long-running challenges around cover and recruitment of staff.

    • focusing managers’ and teachers’ actions more effectively on improving the support provided for functional skills
    • ensuring that all learners attend their classes in English and mathematics regularly and punctually
    • continuing to make improvements to the teaching, learning and assessment of GCSEs and functional skills.
  • Make sure that teachers set, monitor and review precise and ambitious targets for learners and apprentices that enable them to make rapid progress, particularly for the most able.
  • Reduce the variability in achievement between different groups of apprentices, by monitoring the performance of these apprentices carefully, identifying reasons for non-achievement and taking prompt action to address these.

  • Identify the starting points of learners aged 16 to 18 on GCSE English and mathematics courses more accurately so that tutors can plan and teach curriculum content that enables these learners to develop substantial new knowledge, skills and behaviours.
  • Ensure that tutors who work with learners with high needs set targets that are consistently specific and enable all these learners to progress quickly against identified areas for development.
  • Increase attendance in the subjects where it is too low.
